What’s at Stockwood Discovery Centre?
Stockwood Discovery Centre describes itself as a ‘paradise for garden enthusiasts’, and is said to be one the few places in the country where the work of artist Ian Hamilton Finlay can be seen on permanent display.
Finlay’s work can be seen in what’s known as the improvement garden, where six sculptures are located. The inspiration for the design of the garden is said to be taken from Greek mythology, Roman architecture, the landscape gardens of the 1800s and the history of the Stockwood site itself.
There are number of other garden areas that each have a specific focus, ranging from ornamental gardens to wildlife and sensory gardens.
Inside, there are a number of galleries and exhibitions that explore the history of the region from prehistoric times to the evolution of Stockwood House.
Highlights on display include the Shillington Gold Coin Hoard, a Medieval Wenlok Jug in the Life’s Journey Gallery, and collection of originally horse-drawn Mossman carriages.
Groups exploring the galleries can also discover changes to the environment in the Landscape and People Gallery; ‘meet’ some of the early inhabitants of the area in the Discover Archaeology Gallery; and experience the streets of Luton in the 1400s in the Medieval Gallery.
