Over and under the sea to Skye - 17/06/2010

Although we didn’t see a great deal of the Isle of Skye, we saw the magnificent view as we went over the sea and under the sea to Skye. The inspirational Skye Bridge is a very graceful structure and as we drove over the scenery was breath-taking, set off by the tranquil blue waters. Our glass-bottomed boat took us into another world to see a wealth of interest as we glided around the bay.

Every day we were in ‘bonny’ Scotland we had glorious sunshine which bought out the true amazingly blueness of the seas and the lochs, whilst driving through snow-covered mountains (the week before our visit 14 foot of snow fell at the Cairngorms). The ice-cream shop did a roaring trade as we tried to cool off in temperatures of 70 plus degrees.

Our favourite tasting spot was Monick Winery, a real treat. No flashy visitors centre just DIY converted outhouses, and we sampled generous portions of their wines made from all sorts of fruit and berries gathered from the estate. The most amazing one was the Silver Birch wine. Produced from tapping the tree, which produces a staggering two gallons of sap in 24 hours. Merrily we sang On the bonny bonny banks and such like all the way back to the hotel.

Cairngorm Travel owns the hotel, which means they provide these very special holidays at special rates especially if you go a bit out of season, in fact it’s hard to believe they supply such good value memorable group holidays.
